Desert Survival
The desert can be one of the most inhospitable
environments in the world or one of the most diverse.
The distinction depends solely on how much you
know. In this course, students will learn about the
Sonoran desert, its animal and plant life, and how to
survive in a place that receives very little rain and
ranges in temperatures between near freezing and
120 degrees Fahrenheit (sometimes in one day).
Join us on this challenging and interesting trek into the
desert. We'll eat prickly pear cactus fruit, learn about
encounters with rattlesnakes, hunt scorpions at night,
and find hidden caches of water. By the end of the
weekend, you'll be fully prepared to venture into this
beautiful place on your own, whether for off-roading,
camping, hunting, or backpacking.
Advanced Outdoor Survival
All students registering for this course must have
graduated from Intro to Outdoor Survival or have Lead
Instructor approval prior to registration.
The Advanced Outdoor Survival course offered by Lost and
Found Adventures is aimed at those who have found a passion for
the outdoors and the skills it takes to survive in nature. This
course will encompass some primitive skills and will push the
survival skills of the student even further. It will be hard,
challenging, and different than anything they've ever done. We will
take you promptly out of your comfort level and keep you out all
weekend.
Beyond this, we can't tell you anything else. We don't want you to
be prepared because no one is ever fully prepared for a survival
situation. If this course is right for you, you already know it.
Intro to Outdoor Survival
This two day wilderness-intensive offers an introduction to and
hands-on training in many of survival's core skills. These skills
include: fire making, shelter building, map and compass,
non-compass navigation, signaling, edible plants, wilderness first
aid, injury evacuation, pre-travel planning, psychological
survival, water procurement, water treatment, poisonous plants,
poisonous creatures and a brief look into some primitive skills for
those who are interested.
This class is challenging, fun, and rewarding. It will teach you
how to avoid a survival situation and what to do if nature
becomes unpredictable or your situation turns dangerous. You
will go home from this amazing experience with the knowledge to
make and use your own survival kit and you will possess a
valuable set of survival skills and practical knowledge.
Primitive Fire Workshop
Come join us for a day of primitive fire! Learn the art making fire
with techniques used by the native peoples all over America for
thousands of years. We'll discuss the basics of primitive fire
making and fire theory and then get our hands dirty making and
using a bow and drill fire kit. After working with the bow and drill
kit we'll move on to the hand drill, a fire making technique that
truly embodies "rubbing to sticks together" This workshop will
teach you the conditions, materials, and the skills necessary to
make a fire without the aid of the modern world.
Navigation Workshop
Do you know how to find out where you are when you get
lost? Do you know how to follow a map and compass
through the most dense terrain so that you don't get lost?
Spend a day with us and learn how to navigate any
terrain. You will learn about the general principles of
navigation and then we will focus on how to effectively
use map and compass. We will also talk about GPS, and
a few other non-compass navigation techniques. This
course will include a small amount of lecture time along
with a lot of hands on practice. Come prepared for a day
of hiking in the sun. It is preferable if you bring your own
compass so that you can familiarize yourself with it but if
not we will provide you with one. For more information go
to the contact page and drop us a line!
Winter Survival
So many of today's survival scenarios take place in a
cold weather environment. The properties of winter can
catch even the most experienced camper or hiker off
guard. Between freezing temperatures, lack of food
sources, and difficult terrain to navigate and travel
over, winter can be a frightening time to recreate in the
outdoors for most people.
At Lost and Found Adventures, we know that winter can
also be one of the most beautiful and serene times to
be in the outdoors so we created this course to help
people to prepare for wonderful winter excursions.
Learn how to find edibles, cook in the snow, navigate in
a white-out, respond in an avalanche situation, and
build shelters like igloos and snow caves. By the end of
the weekend, no student will fear winter recreation
because they know how to take proper precautions to
protect themselves and their companions.
Using Your GPS
This workshop was created because so many Lost and Found
students came to our Navigation Workshop with their GPS (Global
Positioning Satellite) unit wanting to know how to use it. We aim to
please. A GPS is a new piece of technology that is becoming
commonplace in the outdoor world. It is a handheld electronic device
that communicates with satellites that are constantly orbiting the earth
in order to assist in navigation. The units are becoming more
advanced all the time and many GPS owners do not know what is
possible with them. In this one day workshop, students learn the
history of GPS technology, learn how their GPS works, learn how to
use the navigation technology to its fullest and in many different
situations, and will navigate a preset course. Used in combination with
solid map and compass skills, a GPS is an invaluable tool in the
wilderness and learning to use it properly can be a matter of life and
death.
Bowmaking Workshop
The bow and arrow is one of the most well-known,
accurate and historical weapons known to mankind. In this
two day workshop, learn the principles behind the bow that
tell us why and how it works. Then begin the detailed task
of making your own bow. Choose your wood, decide on the
shape of your bow, and begin to whittle. Once your
wooden bow has been shaped and balanced, learn to
make primitive cordage and string your bow.
Then, our experienced instructor will demonstrate the
making of an arrow including the arrow shaft, the nock (where the arrow sits on the string), the fletchings
(usually feathers on the end of the arrow to help guide it in flight), and the complicated and beautiful
arrowhead using a method called flint knapping. Many of the techniques used in this course have been
learned from studying Native Americans from many different tribes. This course is challenging but your
reward will be a beautiful and functional bow that you yourself created from scratch.
